Day 5 – Sucia Island – 0 Miles

Sunday, September 18, 2011 Sucia Island, WA.

When we woke and looked out the cockpit, Finch was gone. Luckily we knew Doug and Amy were taking off early in the morning to avoid weather rolling in during the afternoon. They needed to be back in Bellingham Sunday evening [Bass: they had a burly but fun run across the top of the Rosario Strait and then motor-sailed down the Hale Passage]. We said our goodbyes the evening before knowing we would be sailing again together soon [whether they want to or not!].

Bass and I decided to stay at Shallow Bay and explore the islands other hiking trails. We walked to the docks at Fossil Bay. Boats can tie up on either side of this long dock and have easy access to drinking water, bathrooms and flat camp sites which include a group site with a roof over the picnic table but open walled. If I was self-supporting in a sea kayak this is where I’d want to be in nasty weather. The views in all directions were wonderful. We strolled through the forested paths eventually coming to the shore of Shallow Bay.

[Once back on board, for better or for worse I proved I can get work done even way out in Shallow Bay… although one hour of cell phone data service for my laptop is NOT cheap!]

That evening we had drinks and grilled dinner in the cockpit, enjoying a very empty Shallow Bay.

The SJI are great. You bring back nice memories, although we didn’t sail there.

Brig, this must be the gazillionth time I’ve said it, but after this post I need to say it again: You write so well and make your account an interesting story.

    Love,
    Debbie
